Overview

The project was developed within a highly sensitive monumental context, where every intervention must comply with strict architectural constraints and the need to fully preserve the historical value of the site. In this scenario, LiFi technology is adopted as a lightweight infrastructure capable of connecting space, storytelling, and digital content without introducing invasive solutions.
Castel del Monte, commissioned by Frederick II in the 13th century and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, represents an emblematic case in which innovation and conservation must proceed in balance. The project is embedded within this delicate relationship with the aim of improving the visitor experience while preserving the monument’s readability and integrity.

CONCEPT

Light as Mediation

At Castel del Monte, light becomes a cultural interface: it not only illuminates the path but also enables the transmission of multimedia content directly to visitors’ devices. LiFi thus transforms the lighting infrastructure into a discreet narrative tool, capable of accompanying the visit without altering the perception of the place.

Technology Without Impact

The design concept is based on a clear principle: introducing innovation without affecting the historical fabric of the monument. For this reason, the solution was developed through autonomous and reversible elements, designed to interact with the site without requiring invasive wiring or permanent modifications.

CHALLENGE

The main challenge was to enable an interactive experience within a monumental environment subject to strict conservation constraints. In a site of such value, every technological device must comply with principles of reversibility, minimal physical impact, and full respect for the historical architecture.
At the same time, it was necessary to make the visit more engaging and contemporary by offering simple access to digital content without introducing visually intrusive equipment. The project therefore addressed, simultaneously, the needs of heritage protection, informational accessibility, and overall visitor experience.

Solutions

The developed solution involves the use of iron totems integrating LiFi G lamps, designed to avoid any direct interference with the monument’s historic structures. In this way, the system enables the transmission of multimedia content through light, without the need for permanent wiring or invasive infrastructure.
The installation creates an interactive pathway where visitors can receive information and in-depth content seamlessly while moving through the spaces. The result is a visitor device that combines technological innovation, light installation, and full respect for the architectural identity of the site.

Results

The intervention introduced a more immersive and narrative mode of visiting Castel del Monte, based on a technology capable of enhancing the visitor experience without compromising the integrity of the monument. The project is described within the initiatives of the Alta Murgia Park as part of the LiFi experimentation across the territory’s museum and cultural network, alongside other strategic locations dedicated to local heritage enhancement.
The most significant outcome is the balance achieved between preservation and innovation: the digital system does not overlap with the architecture but rather accompanies it, making the heritage more accessible and contemporary. In this sense, Castel del Monte becomes a case study of measured technological application, capable of strengthening the visitor experience while fully respecting the historical and artistic value of the site.
